'''John Ellis''' (1874-1932), of [[Rochdale]], [[Lancashire]], was an official executioner between 1901 and 1924; he hanged (inter alia) Dr. [[Crippen]], [[George Joseph Smith]] (the 'Brides in the Bath murderer) and [[Edith Thompson]]; the trauma of hanging the last of these contributed to his retirement and later suicide.
