According the the Bible, God rained burning hot lava onto the city from the sky, and killed all of the inhabitants because of their sin.  Those who were found to be righteous, [[Lot]] and his family, were told to flee before the city was destroyed and to not look back.  Lot's wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt.
