The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military alliance formed in 1949 for the United States, non-communist western European nations, and Canada.  Its initial goals were to contain and respond to the threat of communism in Europe and Asia after World War II. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the organization's activities shifted to the global theater, without a central military objective. NATO military actions include the Kosovo War and post-Taliban rule Afghanistan, where operations are currently ongoing.
