The '''Manchester Ship Canal''' was opened in 1894. It consists of two canalized rivers, the Mersey and the Irwell. Smaller seagoing vessels are able to access [[Salford]] Quays in [[Greater Manchester]], approximately thirty-six miles inland. Access is available further inland to smaller vessels.
Historically the canal was a major freight route, especially for the textile industry around Greater Manchester. Modern ocean-going vessels are too large to use the canal.
