With the prominent position given by Fox that forced the issue into the public eye at least to the extent that it raised serious questions about Edwards, Edwards chose to give a television interview to ABC News less than two weeks later admitting he had an affair, but claiming some elements of the story, including that he had fathered her child, were false.<ref>[http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=5441195&page=1 Edwards Admits Sexual Affair; Lied as Presidential Candidate] ABC News, August 8, 2008</ref>  The major news organizations then all "broke" the story and claimed that the mainstream media could not do so earlier because they had no proof - a position that did not match past choices to air stories.  It was also odd that Fox's choice to air the controversy that may have been the catalyst that forced Edwards to come clean was completely ignored.

The general feeling is that this scandal has put a serious short term dent into Edwards' political prospects.  It has almost certainly removed him from vice presidential consideration and hampered the chances of his becoming Attorney General any time soon.
