Despite his political views, he was responsible for introducing many innovations into Australia such as connecting the first electrical grid into South Australia and the construction of a railroad line from Adelaide to Brisbane.

He was received a knighthood from the Queen in 1966 upon his retirement from politics. He died in 1968 and is buried with his wife, Lady Flora Curtin at St Andrews Cathedral in the town of his birth, Caboulture, QLD.
