In episodes IV, V, and VI, Vader is the apprentice of Darth Sidious, aka Emperor Palpatine. He was responsible for the genocide of Jedi, and the building of both Death Stars. At the end of Episode VI, his dying act was turning from the Dark Side, with the help of his son, Luke.

In the prequel trilogy, Vader started as an innocent young child of about eight. As he grew, he began being seduced by the Dark Side of the Force. When he had a vision that his mother was being tortured, and later when he saw her die, he killed an entire camp of Tusken Raiders. Later, when he had a vision about his wife, Padme, dying in childbirth, he turned to the Dark Side to try to save her. Ironically, his Force choke (Episode III) ended up being part of what killed her.
