In classical [[mythology]], '''Acheron''' is one of the five [[river]]s of [[Hades]], the realm of the dead. In some accounts, the dead had to be ferried across Acheron in order to enter Hades, while in other accounts it is the river [[Styx]] that must be crossed. The ferryman in both cases is [[Charon]].
[[Dante's Inferno]] places Acheron in its traditional position outside [[Hell]], a good example of Dante's conflation of the [[Christian]] and classical traditions.
