Acheron

In classical mythology, Acheron is one of the five rivers of Hades, the realm of the dead. In some accounts, the dead had to be ferried across Acheron in order to enter Hades, while in other accounts it is the river Styx that must be crossed. The ferryman in both cases is Charon.

Dante's Inferno places Acheron in its traditional position outside Hell, a good example of Dante's conflation of the Christian and classical traditions.
