In Greek mythology, Phlegethon was a river of fire, one of five rivers in Hades, the subterranean realm of the dead. Also known as Pyriphlegethon, its name means 'fiery' or 'burning'.[1]
In Dante's Inferno, Phlegethon appears as a fiery river encircling the seventh circle of Hell, where the souls of the violent are punished.
