The '''Tánaiste''' ''("taw-nish-theteh", plural Tánaistí [taw-nash-tee])'' is the title given to the Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland. He or she is usually selected by the [[Taoiseach]] after a general election and usually holds a simultaneous Cabinet position. In recent years, as coalition governments become the norm in Ireland, the position of Tánasite is occupied by the leader of the second largest party in government, however this is not an obligation, and has not been the case since 2007. The current Tánasite is [[Mary Coughlan]], who also serves as Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment. Ms. Coughlan has served in these positions since May 2008.
The role of the Tánaiste is sometimes called into question, and the level of importance attached to it has been seen to vary depending on the person serving. In recent years, the role of Minister for Finance is seen as a more important stepping stone for aspiring Taoiseach than this office.
