::::Hsmom, your recollection is exactly right. Complex numbers are heavily used in a wide variety of scientific and engineering disciplines.
::::The statement about <math>60\sqrt{-1}</math> watt light bulbs is particularly baffling. Complex numbers are universally used in the analysis of AC electricity such as that which powers our light bulbs, though the reactance effects are admittedly minor at 60 Hz.
