'''Antonio López de Santa Anna'''. Born 1794 Jalapa, [[Mexico]] - Died 1876, [[Mexico City]].  President-General of [[Mexico]] during the [[Texas War of Independence]] and [[Mexican-American War]]. He was the most conspicuous and continuously active of the military adventurers who filled Mexico with uncertainty during the first two generations of its independence. Some of his contemporaries considered him a hero (His reputation and influence were further strengthened by his critical role in defeating an 1829 Spanish effort to reconquer their former colony.
