Line 7: Line 7:
Note that there are some services for which government cannot replace private charity, in a free society.  Blood donations are an example of something that government can never provide.  But as liberals increase the size of government and squeeze charity out of culture, all forms of charity, including ones that government cannot provide, decline.

One major exception to this trend is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the nation's largest charitable foundation.  Its major donors include billionaire businessmen Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, both of whom supported Obama in 2008.  Bill Gates strongly supported government spending to stimulate the economy after the economic crisis of 2008<ref>[http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/12/03/AR2008120301954.html Bill Gates Urges Obama to Increase Spending], Washington Post </ref> and in 2008 called for a "capitalism that serves the poor."<ref>[http://www.nextbillion.net/blog/bill-gates-calls-for-capitalism-that-serves-the-poor Bill Gates calls for capitalism that serves the poor]</ref>
