Born in [[Bristol]], [[England]], he joined a stage troupe after being expelled from school in 1918.  He went with them to the [[United States]] in 1920 and remained there.

His first starring role, in 1933, was in ''[[She Done Him Wrong]]'' with [[Mae West]].

In "[[People Will Talk]]", he plays an outspoken but kind medical professor.
