Born in [[Bristol]], [[England]], he joined a stage troupe after being expelled from school in 1918.  He went with them to the [[United States]] in 1920 and remained there, working as a lifeguard on Coney Island.  In 1923, he returned to England anf played small parts in musical comedies.  After a few years, he returned to America.  He played parts in several films in 1932, notably ''[[Blonde Venus]]'' with [[Marlene Dietrich]].
