Like most ''Amazona'' parrots, it is mostly green, but it has a unique purple head and chest, setting it apart from related species.
It is restricted to the [[Caribbean Sea|Caribbean]] island of [[Dominica]], where it is the national bird, even appearing on the national flag. Because of its restricted range, it is endangered, but it is protected by Dominican law.
