The '''Ardennes''' is a region of hills and forest in eastern [[Belgium]], [[Luxembourg]] and north-eastern [[France]].
In the years leading up to the [[Second World War]] the terrain of the Ardennes was believed to be impassable to armour, and the subsequent [[German]] breakthrough there in 1940 came as an unwelcome surprise. In late 1944 the Ardennes saw the last major German offensive in the west: the '[[Battle of the Bulge]]'.
