He was the first child of Wilma Artie, a teacher, and Orvis Wesley Aday, an alcoholic police officer. Because of his parents going around bars, he would often stay with his grandmother Charlsee Norrod. In 1965, Aday graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. He went to Lubbock Christian College, then transferred to the University of North Texas.
