Stephen F. Austin State University
Stephen F. Austin State University is a public university located in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Opened in 1921 as a teacher's college, SFA now offers classes through six colleges (Sciences & Mathematics, Fine Arts, Liberal Arts, Education, Business, and Forestry & Agriculture) and an independent program (Nursing). The Arthur Temple College of Forestry & Agriculture is one of only two forestry schools in Texas and the only one located in the timber-producing East Texas region (as a nod to the industry, athletic teams are the Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks).
SFA in 2023 accepted an invitation to join the University of Texas System, which was later approved by the Texas Legislature; unlike most UT System institutions (such as UT-Arlington, which was known as Arlington State College before the transfer), it has maintained its original name (due to being named for one of Texas' founding fathers).
