Sunderland City Council is a unitary authority in North East England, covering the areas of County Durham which make up the administrative county City of Sunderland. It is named after its largest settlement, Sunderland and also covers the towns Hetton-le-Hole, Houghton-le-Spring and Washington along with numerous villages. The council area received city status in 1992.
It forms part of the county for the purposes of lieutenancy Tyne and Wear and the policing area of Northumbria Police.
