Super Mario Sunshine (ESRB: Everyone) is a Nintendo GameCube video game starring Mario. It was originally released in 2002. The game serves as an indirect follow-up to Super Mario 64. The game's main premise is a departure from several other Super Mario games in that it involves Mario taking a vacation with Princess Peach and Toadsworth to Isle Delfino, only to be forced to clean the entire island after it had been massively polluted by a mysterious impostor named Shadow Mario. The game was later ported to the Nintendo Switch compilation game Super Mario 3D All-Stars alongside two other Super Mario games, Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy.
Mario receives help from a water pack named F.L.U.D.D. for most of his journey. Aside from cleaning Isle Delfino, Mario has to also collect all 120 Shine Sprites, the game's equivalent to Super Mario 64's Power Stars, so that they can each return to the Shine Gate, Isle Delfino's source of bright sunlight, where they fled when Shadow Mario polluted the Shine Monument.
Princess Peach does not start out being the damsel-in-distress, but after Mario has recovered a couple of Shine Sprites, she is kidnapped by Shadow Mario.
Super Mario Sunshine emphasizes the moral of helping other people in need.
Reception
Super Mario Sunshine has been met with large critical and commercial success. It is one of the best-selling Nintendo GameCube titles.
