A personal story: It's funny how strong the feelings were nationwide against Standard Oil and "the Trusts" after Ira Tarbell's reporting. A few years ago I came into possession of some original documents for the building of a Mission Church in Taos, New Mexico (some contracts are written in Spanish). Some contracts read "New Mexico Territory," which is pre-1912. There are orders, bills, and reciepts for everything a church needs, like pews, etc. One company in Cincinnati, Ohio where much of the trust-busting of Standard Oil of Ohio was happening, has as its slogan on its bills "We are not in the Trust." Here's an Ohio company that evidently felt it had lost contracts because people outside Ohio didn't want to gave any money to what they suspected was a Rockefeller front company.
