The Devil Went Down to Georgia
The Devil Went Down to Georgia is a country song written and sung by The Charlie Daniels Band. It is by far their best known song.
In the song, a variant on the traditional "deal with the devil", while in Georgia Satan (finding himself far behind on souls) meets "Johnny", a fiddle player, and challenges him to a fiddle-playing contest: if Johnny wins he receives a golden fiddle; if he loses Satan wins his soul. Johnny, brashly, accepts the bet, telling Satan "I'm the best there's ever been".
Satan starts the contest by playing a rock-beat song on the golden fiddle; Johnny replies with a montage of three traditional songs ("Fire on the Mountain", "The House of the Rising Sun", and the bluegrass standard "Granny Does Your Dog Bite?"). Satan realizes he has lost, and gives Johnny the golden fiddle; Johnny replies that he's ready if Satan wants a rematch, saying "I done told you once, you son of a gun[1], I'm the best that's ever been".
