Treasure Planet was an animated Disney movie that came out in 2002. It was based off the 1883 Robert Louis Stevenson story Treasure Island. Ideas for this movie go back to the 1980s, when John Musker and Ron Clements brought it up, but were shut down by Jeffery Katzenberg, as they did The Little Mermaid instead. After a 10+ year period of asking, plus Katzenberg’s departure in 1994, and with the help from Roy E. Disney, CEO Michael Eisner gave it the green light. However, thanks to poor advertising and releasing it between Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, it flopped at the Box Office. Despite it’s failure, it received praise from audiences and critics, and got nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 2003 Oscars, but lost to Spirited Away.
Themes
It’s themes include family and redemption as shown with Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver. It shows hard work and perseverance when Hawkins worked on the RLS Legacy, and the quest to find Treasure Planet.
