The Tsar Bomba, officially designated as AN602, was the most powerful thermonuclear hydrogen bomb ever detonated, with a yield of 50 megatons. It was detonated on October 30, 1961 over Novaya Zemlya an archipelago in the Arctic. The Tsar Bomba yielded 50 megatons of TNT—over 3,000 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb. Everything within 35 km (22 miles) was obliterated. The mushroom cloud reached over 60 km (37 miles) high. The shockwave circled the Earth multiple times. Radioactive fallout was surprisingly limited due to high-altitude detonation.
