A volcanic eruption is the ejection of lava, steam, ash, heated gases, mud, and other rock fragments at the earth's surface through the action of subterranean magma.

Eruptions may range from being violent and explosive to being slow and continuous. The nature of the eruption often depends on the type of lava associated with the eruption.
