Sidney Leibowitz best known as Steve Lawrence was born on July 8, 1935 in Brooklyn, New York to a Jewish family and his wife, Edith Gormezano (best known as Eydie Gormé) was born in the Bronx on August 16, 1931, also to a Jewish family (Sephardi).
The two have appeared together since meeting on Steve Allen's, The Tonight Show in the mid 1950s.
