Hamza Kashgari, full name Hamza Kashgari Mohamad Najeeb (Arabic:حمزة كاشغري) is a Saudi writer who was arrested and jailed for two year after tweeting statements critical of Muhammad that were deemed "sacrilegious." His arrest was personally ordered by King Abdullah.[1] He was arrested and extradited to Saudi Arabia in Malaysia while attempting to seek political asylum in New Zealand.[2] Human rights groups feared that he would face the death penalty, as blasphemy and apostasy are punishable by death in Saudi Arabia.[3] He was released from prison on October 29, 2013.[4]
