A practice squad is a section of a team's roster that is used to practice with. They do not play in actual games unless they get promoted (as was the case with Green Bay Packers running back Ryan Grant). Players on the practice squad do not count against the teams' roster limitations. Most of any given practice squad is made up of either failed draft picks or free agents that didn't quite make the team at training camp. The players are paid a much more modest sum than that of their main roster counterparts.
