William Jackson “Jack” Edwards (September 20, 1928 – September 27, 2019) was a Republican from Alabama elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1964,[1] coinciding with the presidential race where Barry Goldwater lost to Democrat incumbent Lyndon Johnson. He served for two decades in Congress, retiring in 1984.
U.S. House of Representatives
Edwards had a mixed record on civil rights. He voted against the Voting Rights Act of 1965[2] and the Civil Rights Act of 1968,[3] though worked on the local level to register blacks to vote after the passage of the 1965 legislation.[4] His votes were likely attributed to his viewpoints on states' rights,[5] as there's little to no evidence to suggest he was a racist.
