William Jackson “Jack” Edwards (September 20, 1928 – September 27, 2019) was a Republican from Alabama elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1964,[1] coinciding with the presidential race where Barry Goldwater lost to Democrat incumbent Lyndon Johnson. He served for two decades in Congress, retiring in 1984.
Edwards died in late September 2019 at the age of ninety-one.[2][3]
U.S. House of Representatives
Edwards had a mixed record on civil rights. He voted against the Voting Rights Act of 1965[4] and the Civil Rights Act of 1968,[5] though worked on the local level to register blacks to vote after the passage of the 1965 legislation.[6] His votes were likely attributed to his viewpoints on states' rights,[7] as there's little to no evidence to suggest he was a racist.[3]
Edwards was mostly a conservative who supported a smaller government and increased national defense.[3]
