The Ev and Charlie Show refers to joint weekly press conferences held between 1961 and 1964 by Republican leaders of the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives. The "Ev" is Senate Minority Leader Everett Dirksen of Illinois, who died in office in 1969. The Charlie is House Minority Leader, Charles A. Halleck of Indiana.
Dirksen and Halleck held the press conferences during the administration of Democrat John F. Kennedy. The conferences ended in 1965, when later U.S. President Gerald Ford, a Moderate Republican from Michigan, unseated Halleck in the Republican conference to become the new minority leader. Ford remained minority leader until tapped for the vice presidency in 1973. He soon moved up to president with Richard Nixon's resignation. In 1974, he then tapped Nelson Rockefeller, another Moderate Republican and former New York governor, to succeed Ford as vice president.
