Brad A. Touchstone (born September 19, 1979) is a lawyer from his native Hattiesburg, Mississippi, who is the Republican former state representative for District 101 in Lamar County.[1]He filled the seat from 2016 to 2019.
Touchstone graduated from Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg and attended Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Mississippi. He received bachelor's (2002) and master's (2004) degrees in business administration from Millsaps College in the capital city of Jackson. In 2009, he graduated from the Mississippi College School of Law in Jackson. A practicing attorney since 2009, he is a former Lamar County prosecutor. Since 2014, he has been in the Hattiesburg firm, Nelson Touchstone. He is a member of large Temple Baptist Church in Hattiesburg.[2]
Touchstone ran unopposed in the 2015 Republican primary and general election for House District 101.[3] The seat was vacated by the Republican Toby Barker. In 2011, Barker had defeated the Democrat David Cook, 3,957 (65.9 percent) to 2,049 (34.1 percent).[4]
Touchstone sits on these House committees: (1) Insurance (vice chairman), (2) Drug Policy, (3) Education, (4) Judiciary A, (5) Public Health and Human Services, (6) Public Utilities, (7) Revenue and Expenditure General Bills, (8) Transportation, and (9) Youth and Family Affairs.[2]
Representative Touchstone voted in 2016 against dismemberment abortions in the state. He supported the expansion of exemptions for compulsory school vaccinations. He voted to grant civil and criminal immunity to those reporting what they believe are instances of terrorism. He voted to permit churches to have designated personnel with firearms for the overall protection of the congregation. he supported the bill to guarantee within Mississippi protections for religious beliefs and matters of moral conscience. In 2017, he supported the legislation which authorizes additional methods of execution in Mississippi and the measure to classify the killing of first responders as first-degree murder. He voted to increase identification requirement for Medicaid.[5]
