Chess has contributed many new terms, usually conservative, to our popular culture. Here is a growing list of them:
- pawn (someone easily manipulated by another more powerful, as the "Pelosi pawn" Liz Cheney)
- checkmate
- draw
- endgame
- fork
- gambit
- jeopardy
- stalemate
- sacrifice (not uniquely originating with chess, but popularized by it)
- your move, next move, and best move
