Before his election to the Senate, he served as the U.S. Representative for the 4th congressional district of state from 2011 until 2015, and in the Colorado House of Representatives for the 63rd district from 2005 until 2011. He is a Moderate Republican.
Gardner was defeated for re-election in 2020 by corrupt Democrat John Hickenlooper.[1]

On January 4, 2018, Gardner gave a speech on the floor of the Senate where he threatened to block all judicial nominations unless then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions reversed his announced policy of enforcing federal laws against marijuana in the states where its use is legal under state law.[2] Colorado is one of eight states to legalize recreational use of marijuana.
Gardner also attacked Alabama senatorial nominee Roy Moore in the 2017 campaign against Doug Jones, for the seat now held by Tommy Tuberville.
