John the Apostle may have been a Gentile, in light of:
- his description of Jesus as coming from the Samaritans, with none of the genealogy asserted elsewhere;
- the universality of the Gospel of John, as in John 3:16 ;
- his harsh language against Jewish leaders; and
- the name "John" is Aramaic rather than Hebrew.
