Understanding one of the root causes of Russophobia as it relates to the Russian language, both written and spoken.

Russian is a highly inflected language, which means the emphasis put on one syllable in a sentence can change the entire meaning of the sentence. While audible in spoken Russian, it is not necessarily apparent in written form. So an ambiguity can occur between written and spoken Russian.

Diplomats, translators, and other professionals are acutely aware of this problem, and a Russian speaker can often be mistranslated by looking at the literal written word. Hence, Russian translators are usually deemed more reliable than foreign translators, whose biases creep in and never miss an opportunity to misquote a Russian speaker and put words in their mouth to convey a meaning that they did not intend.

Generally speaking, you may be able to observe this phenomena, even if you are not a Russian speaker, by seeing or reading the frequent use of understatement in Russian idioms and transcripts.RobSIch bin ein breakfast taco 04:21, October 4, 2022 (EDT)

For example, let's look at the stress or emphasis put on a literal sentence in English, one being a command, and another being a warning or suggestion.
Command: You are not going to do that.
Warning or suggestion: You are not going to do that (are you?)
The sentences' meaning is conferred by the inflection of one's voice, while in literary form, they appear to be identical. RobSIch bin ein breakfast taco 04:32, October 4, 2022 (EDT)
