Mary Ann Evans (pen name: George Eliot) (November 22, 1819 - December 22, 1880) was a 19th century British novelist and poet. As a woman she wrote under the pen name of a man. Her best-known works are Middlemarch, The Mill on the Floss and Silas Marner.
