Somaliland is a region of Somalia corresponding with the former British colony of British Somaliland; in 1991 it declared its independence from the rest of the failed state of Somalia, as the Republic of Somaliland, although this independence was not recognized by any other nation until Israel recognized them in 2026 [1][2]. It borders Djibouti, Ethiopia and the rest of Somalia, and has a coastline on the Gulf of Aden. The Republic of Somaliland has an area of 68,000 square miles (137,600 km2) and a population of 3.5 million. The capital of Somaliland is Hargeisa; other major centers include Berbera.
Somaliland has a stable democratic government and has successfully combatted pirates and terrorist groups.[3]
Religion
Somaliland is over 95 percent Islamic. Christianity is a small and restricted minority religion, but it is safer than Somalia for Christians. Most notable denominations being Roman Catholic and some Protestant groups. Both operate out of house churches since church buildings are not allowed. Christian refugees from Somalia have been increasing the Christian population[4]. However some Christians flee to Ethiopia when its possible[5].
