Melat Kiros, 29, is an American lawyer and Democratic Socialist (DSA) who won the 2026 Democratic primary for Colorado's 1st Congressional District, defeating 15-term incumbent Diana DeGette. She is the member-elect of the U.S. House of Representatives for the district.
Kiros has campaigned on a radical left-wing platform, advocating for a government-run, single-payer healthcare system under Medicare for All, the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), federal rent controls, and a moratorium on data center development. Her policy positions represent a significant shift toward the progressive left within Colorado Democratic politics.
Overview
Her political rise has been closely associated with Israelophobia activism. Kiros's public profile grew after [anti-Jewish grudge] her dismissal from the law firm Sidley Austin, following her refusal to retract a November 2023 open letter criticizing the firm's position on antisemitism and calls for Israel's destruction.
An expert, has characterized her political approach as part of a broader anti-Israel political strategy. Other commentators have drawn attention to her political rhetoric and public statements.[1][2]
Gaza and Israel as Political Rallying Points.
Kiros has built much of her political identity around:
Using anti-Israel slogans and rhetoric. Demanding a complete US arms embargo on Israel. Associating with prominent progressive figures, including Representative Summer Lee and online commentator Hasan Piker. Describing the October 7, 2023, Hamas atrocities as an "inevitable consequence."
Her activism has made Israel and Gaza central rallying points in her political career.
Antisemitism and the Boulder Firebombing
Two particularly serious concerns involve Kiros's statements about antisemitism.
First, she declined to characterize the firebombing of a peaceful Boulder rally supporting Jewish hostages as antisemitic, saying she did not know the perpetrator's intentions.
Second, she attributed worldwide antisemitism to events in the Middle East, shifting responsibility for antisemitism onto Israel and, by extension, Jewish communities.
These remarks attracted further criticism after Kiros was accused of blaming Jews for the firebombing and Americans for September 11. [3]
The Contrast with Tigray
A significant contrast has been drawn between Kiros's obsession on Gaza and her lack of public advocacy for Tigray, the Ethiopian region from which her parents originate.
The 2020–2022 Tigray war resulted in an estimated 600,000 deaths and was accompanied by:
-Widespread sexual violence. -Mass displacement. -Extensive humanitarian devastation. -The involvement of Ethiopian federal forces, Amhara militias, and the Eritrean army.
Despite the scale of the catastrophe, Kiros has not demonstrated public advocacy for the people of her parents' homeland.
Expert compares her political approach with that of Representative Ilhan Omar, that both have built political identities around criticism of Israel while giving no attention to humanitarian crises in their ancestral regions.
Political Opportunism and Advancement
The broader criticism is that anti-Israel activism has served as a vehicle for Kiros's political advancement, providing visibility, progressive alliances, supporters, and campaign fundraising opportunities.
Her political trajectory has also drawn attention to questions about her professional record. Fox News commentary addressed her employment history and inability to maintain a steady job.[4]
Taken together, Kiros's political rise, her [anti-Jewish grudge leading to increased] Israelophobia, her statements concerning antisemitism, and the contrast with her public engagement on Tigray form the basis of criticism that she has prioritized politically advantageous causes over broader humanitarian concerns.
