The Assyrians were a Northern Mesopotamian people that descends from the Akkadians they took Babylon in 1000 BC. They established their capital at Nineveh.
Modern Usage
Assyrian also refers to an ethnic group originating in Central Asia. They are a Christian minority, closely related to Chaldeans, practicing Eastern Rite Catholicism, and speaking a language called "Assyrian" or "Syriac", a descendant of Aramaic. Large Assyrian communities can be found in Chicago and Southern California.
