The Ancient Assyrians were a Northern Mesopotamian people that descends from the Akkadians they took Babylon in 1000 BC. They established their capital at Nineveh. In the 7th century BC They were defeated by the Medians and Aramiac speaking Babylonians who replaced them from that time on.
Modern Usage
Assyrian also refers to an ethnic group originating in Central Asia who claim a symbolic Assyrian identity. They are a Christian minority, closely related to Chaldeans, practicing Eastern Rite Catholicism, and speaking a dialect of Aramaic. Many of them can be found in Chicago and Southern California.
