This course has two tracks: Honors and regular. The Honors track is for those who want to excel on a College Board exam, or are very interested in history and want to learn more about it. The Honors track will also address more issues of bias than the regular track. Students can try the Honors track and then drop back to the regular track later if they like, so there is no risk in attempting the Honors track. The more you put into the class, the more you will learn and gain.
Most questions can be answered easily by using the lecture, but a little outside research may help, since every source has a different viewpoint and details. Use outside sources as much as possible!
Some questions will require only a few sentences to answer, while others may need a paragraph or two. Pay attention to reading the questions carefully and answering all of their parts. Even the brightest students lose points when they misunderstand the question by reading carelessly.
1. List the European nations that settled in the New World in chronological order.
2. What inspires you the most about Christopher Columbus?
3. Identify and describe two settlements that did not survive. Why do you suppose they failed?
4. Explain how William Penn was remarkable.
5. Compare and contrast the Puritans and the Pilgrims.
6. What were the four types of colonies, and (if possible) give an example of each.
7. Why do you think Virginia produced four of the first five Presidents of the United States?
Honors Questions
These questions require answers that are a bit longer than the answers above. Answer three out of the following questions (in addition to the questions above):
H1. What problems do you think a colony based on a particular religion or religious ideal might encounter? Do you think it can survive and thrive? Give at least one example.
H2. Explain what the Massachusetts Bay Company did, and how it was financed and managed.
H3. Pick out a mystery of your choice prior to or during this period and suggest an explanation for it.
H4. Answer any of the debate questions in the lectures.
