The romantic period of classical music saw lusher scores, and more personal, human themes. Movement was made away from the heights and into the details of life, its ups and downs, its torments and delights.
It is loosely connected with the romantic period of European literature (exemplified by Byron, Keats, and Shelley). For example, Berlioz' symphonic work Harold in Italy is based on Byron's Childe Harold.
Many well known composers are associated with this era:
- Beethoven
- Berlioz
- Brahms
- Chopin
- Debussy
- Dvorak
- Liszt
- Mahler
- Mendelsohn
- Ravel
- Schubert
- Schumann
- Strauss
- Tchaikovsky
- Verdi
- Wagner
