Stream of consciousness is a literary technique made popular by James Joyce and William Faulkner which consists of a rambling written series of thoughts and feelings by a character in a novel. This developed based on interest in psychoanalysis. The technique was devised during the first half of the twentieth century, and has since been used by many other authors.
Examples of stream of consciousness writing can be found in:
- Ulysses and Finnegan's Wake by James Joyce.
- The Time of the Hero (La ciudad y los perros) by Mario Vargas Llosa.
