Supreme Courts are generally the highest appellate court in a judicial system, with no appeal being possible from their decisions. They are known by many names, including High Courts, Superior Courts, and Courts of Appeal.

In the United States, the highest court is the United States Supreme Court. Each state also has a Supreme Court that serves as a final appellate court. With the exception of New York and Maryland, they are all called Supreme Courts. In New York and Maryland, the supreme court is called the Court of Appeals, due to the judicial system. The Supreme Court of New York is actually a trial court.

In the United Kingdom, the Supreme Court is the House of Lords, which will be replaced in that role by the new Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in October 2009.[1]
