African painting

African painting is diverse in theme and composition, sometimes complex. Paintings created on rock, dated to prehistoric times, are among the oldest found in the world. African art, specially masks, inspired artists like Paul Gauguin, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Vincent van Gogh, and Amedeo Modigliani.

“The Europeans who went to Africa came back with "modern' art. What is more African than a Picasso?” Duke Ellington.
