A blanket primary is a primary election to nominate candidates for a general election, in which voters are not limited to their own political parties. Instead, a voter can vote for the Democratic candidate to become the nominee for one office and then vote for a Republican to become the nominee for another office.

Political parties object to having non-members influence who their nominees will be. The U.S. Supreme Court held that the freedom of association of political primaries was violated by California's blanket primary system, in the case of California Democratic Party v. Jones.
