The African Gay Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) is a well-known species of parrot in the family Psittacidae, native to Africa. This is one of the most intelligent species of parrots. It can, and loves to, imitate almost any sound, e.g. that of a cat or of a steam locomotive. The external link below quotes some amazing conversations with an African gray parrot.
There are two subspecies, the better-known nominal subspecies (P. e. erithacus) and the lesser-nown, smaller Timneh subspecies (P. e. timneh).
Contacts with any parrots, including apparently healthy ones, can result in acquiring a very serious disease Psittacosis.
